ERD I

This first level Emergency Response Diving Course is designed to give the certified open water diver, or open water certified public safety diver, the fundamental skills needed to safely function as part of an OSHA and NFPA compliant public safety dive team in both the diver and tender roles.

ERD II

The ERD II Course furthers the public safety diver’s knowledge and advances skill sets for emergency response diving. The ERD II Course will examine lifting techniques, encapsulation, a victim’s death, as well as, physiological changes a submerged body undergoes, mechanics of drowning, handling of remains, environmental issues, full face mask and dry suit use.

ERDI UNDERWATER EXPLOSIVE RECOVERY SPECIALIST

The objective of this training is to secure these underwater explosives or hazardous devices, remotely raise them to the surface, and then render safe or dispose of them on shore. This class also provides training in how to properly conduct a thorough and detailed underwater post blast or arson investigation.

ERD DRYSUIT OPS

The ERD Dry Suit Ops Course develops the knowledge and skills that are necessary for dry suit diving operations in emergency response diving. Introducing fundamental skills of dry suit diving and other important topics such as; encapsulation, contaminated environments, protecting portable water supplies and decontamination procedures.

ERDI HULL INSPECTION

This course is designed to provide information and hands on training to students and dive team members who may be called upon to search the hulls of vessels in port and at anchor as part of security screening, evidence recovery or other purposes.

Underwater hull inspections are considered an overhead environment and as such require additional training, safety measures and team protocols when these operations are occurring. It will often entail additional risk, extremely poor diving conditions and specific skill sets are required to accomplish the mission successfully.

By becoming familiar with the use of dive lights, and night diving techniques, tending procedures, communications, and buoyancy control, the diver will be able to plan and execute a night dive with maximum safety.

ERD SMALL BOAT OPERATIONS

This course is designed to expand a diver’s knowledge in Small Boat Operations and is primarily intended to provide the minimum knowledge and skills that an individual must demonstrate to qualify to stand watch and/or perform other specific routine duties necessary for the safety, security or proper operation of a small craft in emergency response diving.

ERD SWIFT WATER OPS

The ERD Swift Water Ops Course is designed to provide information and hands-on training to students/team members who may be called upon to respond to a swift water call where no water entry is practical or possible. This is defined by NFPA 1006/1670 guidelines as “water moving at a rate greater than 1 knot.”

The purpose of the ERDI Underwater Crime Scene Investigations Program is to provide necessary skills and knowledge in performing underwater crime scene investigations, preservation, and proper documentation for court-ready testimony.

ERD UNDERWATER THREAT ASSESSMENT (UTA) OPERATIONS

This course is designed to give the certified emergency response diver the skills and knowledge necessary for recognition and identification only of hazardous devices underwater. This course is not an explosives recovery course or renders safety in underwater explosives protocol.

ERD INSTRUCTOR TRAINER

This program trains candidates to conduct the ERDI Instructor Course.

In addition, ERDI Instructor Trainers are qualified to conduct the ERDI Non-Diving Ops Instructor Course and Ops Instructor ratings for ERDI Instructors.

A corresponding, current instructor level rating must be held for all IT levels, along with minimum student certifications as detailed in this outline.

During this course, you will work directly with the headquarters staff presenting and evaluating various subjects such as: methods of instruction, dive leader risk management, the business of scuba diving, as well as teaching technical instructor level courses.

ERD SUPERVISOR

The ERD Supervisor Course is to qualify the experienced emergency response divers to supervise emergency response diving teams. It also serves to develop leadership qualities as a prerequisite for ERDI Instructor.

The ERD Instructor Course is the next step in the ERDI Professional realm. The ERD Instructor Development Course prepares and teaches candidates to conduct ERD Tender, ERD I, ERD II and ERD Supervisor Courses under the guidance of an ERD Instructor Trainer.

ERDI NON-DIVING SPECIALTY INSTRUCTOR

The ERDI Non-Diving Specialty Instructor Course is designed to teach non-diving members of a public safety dive team the knowledge to safely function as an independent instructor of the non-diving specialties/ops listed below:

Visual Inspection Procedures
Tender
Swift Water
Other non-diving Ops, i.e. unique ops, offered by ERDI (subject to headquarter’s approval)

In order to become an instructor for one of the above courses; a candidate must be certified by a qualified instructor trainer experience based upgrades are not available.

Instructors who hold equivalent certifications with a recognized agency and wish to cross over as a non-diving specialty instructor may do so by applying via current instructor crossover procedures.
