Marico Oog, South Africa

By Simon Brown (Adapted from "passport to diving the world")

Well Known For :

A real treat for the adventurous diver.

The landlocked northwest province of South Africa is not an obvious place to take scuba gear, but the few divers who make the two-hour drive from Johannesburg are in for a treat. A mere 40m in diameter and 16m at the deepest point, the fringes of Marico Oog (the word oog means "eye" in Afrikaans) are lined with a dense underwater forest of lily leaves and their pencil-thin stems pointing up towards the surface. The deeper section of the spring has near vertical sides, dropping down to the freshwater vent at the bottom. Careless fin strokes near the vent will disturb the silt and reduce the 20m + visibility, but clarity soon returns thanks to 200,000L of fresh water flowing from the spring each hour. Facilities at Marico Oog include a compressor, and divers can rent chalets or bring their own camping gear.

(Ok enough with the stories, I'm itchin' for a dive)
