Hani Faru, Maldives

By Adam Broadbent (Adapted from "passport to diving the world")

Well Known For :

Diving in the Maldives leaves you with a sense of awe and amazement not found anywhere else in the world.

Hani Faru will get you up and close with the two Maldivian greats: mantas an whale sharks. Best of all, it might very well happen on the same dive. A key-shaped section about 15m deep on the atoll's outer reef means, at the right tides, the plankton gets trapped and saturates the water. Up to 100 mant rays and, as legend has it, eight whale sharks can be drawn to this place to feed. Either trying to maximise their feeding potential or just because they can, manta rays will continuously perform loop-the-loops, sometimes even around divers. Whale sharks will hover vertically in the water, gulping down the plankton like 10m-long Hoover vacuums. Divers and snorkellers can both enjoy this site and, with all the action happening near the surface, you'll never be restricted by bottom time.

(Ok enough with the stories, I'm itchin' for a dive)
