The only diveable aircraft carrier in the world.
Imagine seeing this list on a dive: live bombs, missiles and torpedos; anti-aircraft guns and machine guns; Curtis Helldivers and TB Avenger torpedo bombers; solid brass diving helmets and running lights; trumpets and gas masks. The world's largest wreck dive, Saratoga has it all plus an incredible history. She survived a war, five kamikaze pilots, seven bombs, and the Able nuclear bomb. It wasn't until the Baker blast that she sank to the depths in 1946. She's so deep, so it takes a few dives to see the sights. The massive twin housed, five-inch 38-calibre machine guns on the flight deck are the most photographed. But it's worthwhile to visit the hangar deck, accessed through the elevator shaft. Watch out for crates of bombs ready for loading into the adjacent planes. Toward the stern are more anti-aircraft guns and gun directors. The most impressive dive is to the bow. Sitting upright on the sandy bottom at 52m, Saratoga curves to the flight deck at 30m, her phenomenal size dwarfing divers.
(Ok enough with the stories, I'm itchin' for a dive)
