Perpendicular Wall, Australia

By Beth & Shaun Tierney (Adapted from "passport to diving the world")

Well Known For :

The best place to dive amongst huge corals.

I don't care what they say, size matters. I know: I'm what they call vertically challenged. So it doesn't take much to make me feel overwhelmed. This dive though, well, it just takes that to the max. Like it watched me roll in and thought, Just you wait. I've never seen corals like it. Hanging behind a fan that is more than double my height, I wonder how they can get to be so huge. OK, so it's an anomaly, there won't be more like that. Around the next bend in the reef and we're running parallel with the coast, the currents are a little stronger and as far as we can see, up and down the wall, there are huge corals. Whips, fans, all so much bigger than I am. Of course there are also masses of fish - tiny anthias, large sharks - but I only have eyes for the really big things.

(Ok enough with the stories, I'm itchin' for a dive)
