The Wreck at Kuda Giri, Maldives

By Beth & Shaun Tierney (Adapted from "passport to diving the world")

Well Known For :

A wreck now turned to a thriving reef, Kuda Giri is home to myriad fish.

Fish, fish, fish. No matter where we look there are masses of fish that make the Maldives, well the Maldives. But there's no reef here. Well, there is, but it's over there, away to the left. We might go there later, but for now we're content to hover over this wreck of a small coastal trader. They said it sank elsewhere and was moved to the side of the giri to create an articial reef. And so it did...about 30m of slowly rusting steel has become an apartment block for marine life. Corals and sponges compete for floor space. Down on the propeller there are tubastrea and black coral branches. Above them dancing anthias and bannerfish, sweepers and butterflyfish, Moorish idols and surgeons. Fish and more fish. Even those that pretend not to exist - frogfish and leaf scorpionfish - seem quite at home.

(Ok enough with the stories, I'm itchin' for a dive)
