Fish Rock Cave, Australia

By Ken Hoppen (Adapted from "passport to diving the world")

Well Known For :

Not for the claustrophobe.

Not for the claustrophobe, Fish Rock Cave extends over 100m through the island! Starting in a gully at around 24m, divers swim over wobbegongs and dodge black grouper as they ascend through a chimney to the main cavern. In the jet-black interior there are lobsters and slipper lobsters, but the best is still to come. Silhoutted in the main entrance, only 11m deep, are grey nurse sharks surrounded by thousands of bulleyes. Swimming past these large fish is a test of nerves as they move in to patrol the dark recesses of the cave. Exiting into the light brings you into a large ravine, often with 30 or more of these sharks silently circling. With resident loggerhead turtles, cownose rays, and the occasional Queensland grouper, what more could you ask for?

(Ok enough with the stories, I'm itchin' for a dive)
