The ultimate night dive.
It's the ultimate night dive: midnight, over a 200m trench in the Sea of Cortez. You descend into the black depths, heart pounding. A luminous fishing lure bounces up and down a few metres away, and you stare outward at the all absorbing black wall when wham! Out of nowhere several two-metre torpedos shoot in and latch onto the fishing lure, wrestling with it for a few seconds before shooting back off into the pitch black. Now a pack of 20 to 30 Humboldt squid circle, countless more to your sides and below. At times you are bumped, punched, slapped and at best fondled until it feels like your heart is about to burst and you can take it no more. Then a smaller squid gets in the way of a leviathan and is fragged away, eaten alive. This is the point where you decide you've seen enough and ascend as fast as is safely possible to climb back aboard the boat.
(Ok enough with the stories, I'm itchin' for a dive)
