Dive into the Seas and Oceans

Marigondon cave/cavern @ Mactan, Cebu, Philippines - 8th Sept 2019

Marigondon cave/cavern @ Mactan, Cebu, Philippines, note that this kinda of dive is only suitable for very advance level divers, preferably above Rescue level divers. See the christian cross burials and urns there, being placed on the grounds of this cave/cavern. Just want to clarify that there was no death inside the cave, the tombstone and cross was place there at the request of diver who pass away on land. One of them was a Korean. Info provided by local DM who actually know the person earlier on...

Just last year, there was a diver who died of heart attack while diving to see the tambuli plane wreck.

We went with the instructor dive guide into the Marigondon cave, did both our independent dives into the Cave. Very strong currents approached us, and we used up a lot of strength just to swim into the cave/cavern, even some technical divers using the DP vehicle, also managed to swam into the cave/cavern hole slowly but steadily. Surprisingly, Kevin, I and diving instructor, despite being faced with strong currents, we are not fazed, gave each other support, and managed to swim/scuba dive into the hole of the Marigondon cave/cavern.
Our thoughts about diving at the Marigondon cave.

The Marigondon cave dive site is not well-known for nothing, it is one of the best dive site in the island of Mactan, Cebu, Philippines.

This dive site is for advanced and experienced divers only because the entrance of the Marigondon cave is below 30 meters (100 feet), and there is often a strong to very strong current.

We recommend you to dive this site with nitrox, but the most important is to not forget your underwater camera and your lights. You can always ask us to provide you a camera or a flashlight, though.

The Marigondon cave is located at 6.5 kilometers (3.5 nautical miles) heading to the 37° in only 10 minutes by boat from our Scotty's Dive Center headquarters in Mactan.

To dive at the Marigondon cave, you need to be a certified advanced diver or a deep diver as the entrance of the cave is below 30 meters (100 feet).
The bottom of the Marigondon cave is at 37 meters (120 feet) and has a diameter of around 10 meters (33 feet).

The cave itself has a lengh of 40 meters (130 feet).

The wall around the cave is covered with gorgeous gorgonians and sea fans, and goes down to around 70 meters (230 feet).

The Marigondon cave is not a real cave, it's a cavern as you can always see the light from outside wherever you are in the cavern.

Diving at the Marigondon cave.

The Marigondon cave is one of the most popular diving sites in Mactan. There is often a strong current along the wall between the tides. Once inside, there is no current at all and the bottom of the cave is covered by sand and corals.
The ceiling and the sides of the Marigondon cave are covered with beautiful gorgonians and sea fans. Some pufferfish can be spotted as well.

At the far end of the cavern, there are a few crevices. If you block the light of your torch, by putting it against your chest, you will see fluorescent fishes shoaling inside these crevices.

On the way back after exiting the cave, you will drift along an absolutely gorgeous wall where critters are living on it.

This wall might also be the most beautifull wall around Mactan and Cebu. It is fully covered with many species of colorful soft and hard corals as well as gorgonians and sea fans. Saw many small shoals of fishes there, could find and see a tiny seahorse as well. :)
