Canyons, Philippines

By Scott Bennett (Adapted from "passport to diving the world")

Well Known For :

Be swept away by the lush undersea landscape.

Soon after entering the water I'm swept away past a lush seascape of corals, barrel sponges, and myriad reef fish. However, the main attraction lies ahead: Etched in the seabed are three large fissures at depths ranging from 24 to 30m. To escape the current, duck into one of the Canyons, sit back and enjoy the show! Vast swarms of orange anthias congregate among vivid pink soft corals, while enormous fan corals are a magnet for large harlequin, oriental, and ribbon sweetlips, emperor angelfish, lionfish, and batfish. Normally shy in other locations, the big fish are quite tolerant of divers and allow a close approach. Large shoals of snapper, trevally, emperors and chevron barracuda are frequently observed cruising the deep waters just off the third canyon.

(Ok enough with the stories, I'm itchin' for a dive)
