A mecca for encounters with whale sharks.
Following the annual mass coral spawning, whale sharks come to Ningaloo Reef. And that brings the divers. Despite its huge size, the whale shark is a filter feeder, gulping up tonnes of plankton and small fish (which are attracted to the coral spawning) just offshore. Since its discovery as a feeding ground for whale sharks more than 20 years ago, Ningaloo has become Mecca for encounters with this beautiful fish. Operators have the experience planned to a T, with spotter planes and strict guidelines that ensure the whale sharks - and the snorkellers - will come back every year.
