Wolf Island, Ecuador

By Christopher Crowley (Adapted from "passport to diving the world")

Well Known For :

The best dive spot to witness hammerhead sharks.

I've witnessed the seasonal migration of wildebeest and caribou herds, but the thousands of large hammerheads, each three metres long, is undoubtedly the greatest wildlife spectacle in the universe. It's the eerie body morphology, and that they come close enough to touch. Whatever the reason for their gathering - mating or visiting cleaning stations - the sight is addictive, though it's a short encounter. The parade typically lasts about 10 minutes. Having a hammerhead zoom at you from out of the murk and nearly bang its head on your dome port is guaranteed to double-clutch your heart. As if any added spice were needed, there are also squadrons of eagle rays, pods of dolphins, and patrols of Galápagos sharks at this winner-take all site.

(Ok enough with the stories, I'm itchin' for a dive)
