For now, all diving crazy people in Laos can head to the neighboring Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. All three are easily accessible through bus, train and air. There are excellent dive sites along the coastal areas of all three countries. The waters are warm and crystal clear. The marine life in these waters is diverse, in the true sense of the word. Nha Trang, in Vietnam is especially a diver’s paradise. The area off the coast of Nha Trang is part of a protected Marine Park. Cambodia is also being developed as a dive destination but overfishing poses a serious threat to coral formations of Cambodia. However, Thailand is perhaps the best of all. The cost of a diving excursion in Thailand is the cheapest in the world and the sites are out of this world, beautiful. Pattaya and Koh Tao are two such Thai diving heavens.

Unexplored Myanmar already has a plethora of dive sites with more just waiting to be discovered. The currently mapped sites are spread out mostly up and down the southwest coast which is home to the Mergui Archipelago. Further west of the archipelago, lie a series of open ocean dive sites which feature larger marine life. Whatever your dive experience, you are sure to find a site to satisfy the explorer in you. With more than 800 islands, Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago is home to some of southeast Asia’s best diving. While the south area of the archipelago has recently suffered from overfishing and shark finning, the northern half remains untouched. Dive masters are still discovering everything the area has to offer, but you can expect healthy corals, schools of devil rays and the occasional whale or nurse shark. Tahe small stuff is turning heads too. Frogfish, lobsters, crabs and colorful shrimp create a macro-lover’s dream. Further west of the Mergui Archipelago, sites like the Burma Banks offer a different picture of what Myanmar has on offer. What may look like small 49 foot (15 meter), flat-top mountains on the surface, are actually giant mountains that plunge 1000 feet (300 meters) to the sea floor. Shark sightings are all but guaranteed on these open ocean dives. Nurse sharks are frequently seen with a few reef sharks thrown in here and there. Burma Banks is definitely the place to go if you love to see pelagic species.

About the diving expedition in Son Doong Cave to explore and learn about the connection between Son Doong Cave – the world’s largest cave and Hang Thung, a huge cave that found in 1994. This is a 600-meter cave diving expedition in the underground river inside Son Doong Cave, which never been done or researched before, which means that the obstacles in the expedition are difficult to identify. There is no accurate information or the confirmation of the connection between Son Doong Cave and Hang Thung Cave until the diving expedition is completed with the final result. However, with all of the experiences the cave diving team had before; together with the professional porter team to help carry specialized equipment into the cave; the possibility of proving the connection between these caves, with positive results, is quite high. There will surely be many interesting things under the water. The cave is thought to be around three million years old and almost 5km long.
