Recently, I was reading an article that discussed how people often find hobbies that allow them to “tinker.” Essentially, certain hobbies allow a person to build, perform maintenance, and improve things as part of the associated enjoyment. Some examples of these types of hobbies include woodworking, motorcycle maintenance, and metalworking. In each of these activities, people work to refine the things they enjoy. In some cases, the individual performs regular maintenance, while in other cases they learn to make better use of tools or products. The problem with everyday life is that this level of attention rarely crosses over into what we view as our “normal” lives.

Initially, we simply called it diving. It had no other name. Some of us dived in caves, primarily to explore and map. Tourist dives only tested equipment or procedures, or train us to explore further. Others dived on shipwrecks; real shipwrecks with history and treasure, not the artificial reefs many today call shipwrecks. We sometimes learned the hard way. We had no manuals; these came later. It was a “game of ghosts” as the community tried to work out what went wrong and develop standards to prevent history from repeating itself. There is a great deal of ‘up’ on St Helena, and also a lot of ‘down’. Therefore a car is often one of the best ways to get around. There is an excellent taxi service on the island, but you should book in advance to ensure availability. Some of the operators also take guided tours of St Helena. There is a local bus service but the schedule revolves around the local working day and services vary from three a day to three a week on some less busy routes. If you’re dead set on independence or planning a longer stay on the island, cars can be rented from around £15 a day, but you need to be a competent driver. There are narrow roads, steep-sided slopes and extremely tight hairpins. However, other road users are faced with the same predicaments and are (mostly) courteous. Fuel is priced similarly to the UK.

The NOAA has also warned that without urgent action, the earth’s coral reefs may be obliterated by 2050. In 2016 and 2017, the northern and central sections of the 2300km-long reef were devastated by coral bleaching caused by heat stress. Nearly a third (30%) of the coral died in the 2016 event alone. A confronting new report released by the Climate Council last Thursday claimed that by 2034, the reef could be hit by similar bleaching events every two years.

" Perhaps CDA care to enlighten the public on its relevant guidelines for companies to comply; and if it already knows about this case, whether there was a material breach, or non-compliance, of those guidelines. Also, do advise whether Mola Subsea Services Pte Ltd is a member of the Association. Meanwhile, deepest condolences to Mrs Seet, and all family members. Stay strong, please.

Take care of your gear and it will take care of you. This certainly seems to be the case in many equipment intensive activities, especially in diving. Through proper use and care of one’s gear, a typical scuba setup can last for years. On the flip side, failing to take the relatively simple steps in caring for one’s gear can lead to early breakdown and deterioration of equipment.

In the quest to further our scuba training, the question is aquarium dives: to count or not to count? The qualifications require a minimum number of dives. So, the obvious question is what constitutes a “dive”? Most of the major scuba certifying organizations only define standards for training dives, not recreational dives. However, many divers agree that a dive must be at least 20 feet for at least 20 minutes.

You’ve probably seen them at your dive center, sat in small groups with laptops, paper, slates and pencils. Talking about things like gradient factors, deep stops, deco, lost gas, and bottom mix, while they “plan” their dive. You may have run into them on a dive boat, where four of them have got enough gear and tanks to occupy half the dive deck, leaving you and the other 16 divers with little space to move. You wonder ‘why on earth are these guys wearing dry suits’, it’s like 38 degrees outside and the water is 28 degrees, this is shorty weather! These guys are technical divers, or “techies”… So; what on earth is technical diving?

It was one of the scariest dives of my life. The March winds were blowing over the chilling 50° (F, 10°C) waters of Narragansett Bay as we swam across the barren bottom, following nothing more than a compass bearing to our destination. At a depth of 80 feet (24 m), the bottom turned to sand and sloped away into murky darkness, and it was there that my troubles began. Our pace had been only moderate, but for some reason I was having problems breathing. It seemed that my regulator wasn’t producing enough air. Had I not started the dive with a full tank, I would have thought I was out of air. I signaled my buddy to stop for a moment and glanced down to check my pressure gauge. What I saw both shocked and surprised me. The gauge read nearly 2,000 psi, but with each breath, the needle would unwind and bounce off the zero mark. The fear welled up inside me as the thought of a regulator failure in this deep, dark, dismal corner of the bay materialized in my mind. My options were limited, and the thought of buddy breathing seemed as intimidating as an emergency free ascent to the surface.

It may sound like strange preparation for someone in diving, but I was trained as a history teacher. And one of the things I learned was to value the contributions made by our predecessors in helping us become what and who we are today. Surely, unless we understand where we’ve been, we cannot possibly appreciate where we are. We’re products of history as much as we are the progeny of our parents. While this may sound like something straight out of History 101, the same logic applies to the history of diving. To understand where we are, we must know where we’ve been.

As a child of the ’50s, I was a big fan of the hallmark TV series Sea Hunt and its indomitable hero, Mike Nelson, played by the late actor Lloyd Bridges. One episode I particularly remember involved the kidnapping of a scientist. As this was the era of Sputnik, it was implied — though never overtly stated — that the culprits were a group of “stinking commies.” The scientist was being held in a cave on an island. Central to the story line was the fact — seemingly unknown to the bad guys — that the cave could be entered from underwater. Of course, Mike Nelson knew all about the underwater entryway and planned a highly sophisticated escape: he swam into the cave, distracted the guards, gave the scientist a 30-second scuba lesson, dodged a few bullets on the way out and — fade to black — the world was once again a safe place for mom, apple pie and clean-cut capitalists.

The last thing you probably want to read is another tirade on the dangers of drinking and smoking. Besides, what can I say that’s new? Although some recent evidence points to drinking alcohol in moderation as a health benefit, no one doubts the dire consequences of imbibing in excess. And no informed person on Earth doubts that smoking is merely a form of protracted suicide. But while we’ve known about these dangers for decades, many of us still drink — at least occasionally — and a quarter of us smoke.

Food Sense for All Good nutrition is important to everyone’s health and can help prevent the onset of such diseases as Diabetes. For those who suffer with Diabetes or pre-diabetes, staying healthy is, in part, a matter of making the right choices when it comes to dietary intake. Sugars and other carbohydrates are readily converted to glucose, but the rate at which that occurs is measured by something called glycemic index. A high glycemic index indicates a food will rapidly be converted to glucose, causing a rapid spike in blood sugar. A low glycemic index means that the digestive process for that food is slower, meaning a slow production of glucose and a slower rise in blood sugar. For example, white rice rapidly converts to glucose and has a glycemic index of 72, whereas an apple, which converts much more slowly, has a glycemic index of only 36. However, the glycemic load, which includes the effect of typical portion size, may be an even better measure of a particular food’s effect on blood glucose.

In scuba diving, when it comes to assessing fitness, times have certainly changed. Years ago, many were reluctant to even consider diving because they thought it was deep, dark and dangerous. Today, it’s just the opposite. Many are lulled into diving because they view it as simple, safe and easy. Indeed, diving takes place in a relatively weightless environment, which may make it seem effortless, but it does require a degree of both health and stamina.
